Welcome to year 3 and 4.

Our topic for the Autumn Term is ‘Stones and Bones’. Throughout this term we will focus on developing our Historical knowledge and understanding. We will be learning about how people lived during the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age and how life changed throughout these periods of time.

We will begin the term with an exciting hook day in Forest Schools based on our new class book - Mud Boy by Sarah Siggs. We will focus on PSHE: relationships, overcoming challenges and accepting differences.

In Science, we will learn about plants and rocks. We will explore the different parts of flowering plants and their functions, including roots, stems, leaves and flowers. We will investigate what plants need to grow and stay healthy, how water moves through plants, and how flowers help plants reproduce through pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal. We will also study different types of rocks, comparing them by their appearance and properties. In addition, we will learn how fossils are formed and discover that soil is made from rocks and organic matter.

In English we will use what we have learnt in Science to write an explanation about how plants grow. We will also write a diary entry to describe a day in the life of a person in the Stone Age, using our new History knowledge. We will focus on our speaking and listening skills through our performance to parents in Autumn 2. We will finish the Autumn term by writing a letter to Father Christmas

In Maths, we will focus on building and strengthening our knowledge of Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, and Area.

We will develop our creative skills in Art and Design and Technology. In Art, we will be researching artist Joseph Turner and analysing his style whilst developing our drawing and painting techniques. In Music, we will be focussing on reading staff notation and writing our own short scores.  Closer to the Christmas period, we will continue to develop our skills of reading music through Christmas carols.

In Geography we will focus on developing our map skills linked to compass points, keys and grid references. We will locate Great Britain and other European countries as well as creating our own maps showing the land use of a part of Cinderford.  

In RE will we discuss What influence does believing in God as Trinity have for Christian worldviews? and

How does Hajj show what matters to Muslims in Britain?

In Computing we will learn how networks work and how data travels across the internet. We will learn how to search safely and manage our online information, including our privacy and security. We will also learn about the importance of Copyright and Ownership.

In MFL, we will begin and continue to develop our use and understanding of the French language by building up our French vocabulary and use our vocabulary to describe people.

In PE we will be developing our skills in handball, basketball, sports hall athletics and dance. You will not need to bring your PE kits to school but you can wear your PE kits on our PE days. Some PE will be outside so please make sure you’ll be warm enough.  

You can support us by listening to your child read regularly, helping them learn their times tables and practice their spellings. Children will receive an acorn and raffle ticket each time they read at home (you can sign their reading record book or they could upload a photo/video to Seesaw). Children can become ‘Maths Champions’ and receive a special pencil when they know all the times tables and division facts up to 12x12 and are able to use them to solve a variety of problems. Homework is set at the beginning of the year and children will be rewarded for each piece they do.
