Welcome to Ospreys class I'm Miss Howard and I am the class teacher. Miss Oakley and Mr Green also work in Ospreys class.
We will settle into school by doing a book unit on Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter. During this unit, we will focus on the PSHE topics linked to this book including behaviour expectations, healthy relationships, friendships and anti-bullying.
Our main topic for this term is ‘Blast from the Past’ where we learn the history of The Victorians. We will begin our topic with a Victorian school day where the children will learn what it was like to go to school in the Victorian times.
Throughout the topic we will learn about what it was like to live in Victorian times, the reign of Queen Victoria and other important changes that happened to Britain during this time. After half term, we are going to the Dean Heritage Centre to learn what life was like for a Victorian miner.
In English we will start off by writing a non-chronological report about The Victorians. We will write instructions on how to make Victorian toys and write a diary of a Victorian miner. Also, we will write a time-slip story where our characters will go back to the Victorian times.
In Science, we will be learning about states of matter including solids, liquids and gases. We will investigate how these states of matter change.
In Art, we will look at Victorian artist – William Morris. We will identify the characteristics of his art work and design and sketch our own. After half term, we will look at Victorian architect – Isambard Kingdom Brunel. We will design and construct our own bridge.
In Music, we will learn about the history of music and understand how music has changed throughout time. Specifically we will look at composers from the Romantic period. After half term, we will learn songs from the musical Oliver Twist.
In the Autumn term, our P.E days will be a Monday and Wednesday. Children will need to come to school wearing their PE kit on these days (they will not change during the school day). Please make sure you wear appropriate clothing for PE such as joggers or shorts (weather dependent). As it gets colder, please make sure your child comes to school in warm PE clothes as we will be outside for most of our lessons.
Homework will be set on Seesaw this term. Children can complete all their homework on Seesaw and send it to me to be approved. Also, you can support us by listening to your child read regularly and helping them learn their times tables and spellings.
Children will receive rewards for completed homework and if an adult signs their link book to let us know they have read at home. They will also receive a raffle ticket and be entered into our reading raffle competition where they can win a prize!
Children can become ‘Maths Champions’ and receive a special pencil when they know all the times tables for their year group: Y3: x2, x10, x5, x3, x4 and x8, Y4: all x tables up to 12 x 12.
We are all looking forward to learning new and interesting things this term.
