Squirrels

Year 2 - Mrs F. Smith

My name is Mrs Smith and I am the teacher in Squirrels class.  The other adults who will be working in our classroom are Mrs Robins and Mrs Mattacola.

Our topic this term is ‘Scrapheap Challenge’. As a starting point for the topic we will be holding a whole school Knex challenge to design and build different structures. The focus of the KS1 challenge will be based on a bridge. During this challenge we will be promoting team work, co-operation and the ability to overcome problems or difficulties. We will create persuasive posters in Literacy to advertise the competition.

The theme of bridges will continue through many aspects of the curriculum including using the traditional tale ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. Through D&T and Science, we will be encouraging the children to work together to design and build a bridge strong enough for the three goats to cross. We will be exploring how we can make these structures stronger, stiffer and more stable through selecting and using the most suitable materials by investigating their properties. In History, we will learn about a significant individual who has contributed to national and international achievements and write a non-chronological report to share our new found knowledge of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. In Computing we will be learning about and using algorithms. We will use algorithms to program and debug simple programs. We will also continue learning about how to stay safe on line.

Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday so please ensure that your child has a PE kit in school each week including shorts, t-shirt and daps so that they are able to fully participate.

We will also set a homework pack with weekly activities to complete. The activity pack will be handed out in the first couple of weeks and can be returned at the end of term, or weekly if preferred. The children receive R1’s for each completed piece of homework handed in. It is also essential that you hear your child read daily and support them with their phonic packs. An R1 and a sticker on their reading challenge bookmark will be given each time your child reads at home but please remember to sign their link book to let us know they have read.

We look forward to another fun filled and exciting spring term.
