Squirrels

Year 2 - Mrs F. Smith

My name is Mrs Smith and I am the teacher in Squirrels class.  The other adults who will be working in our classroom are Mrs Robbins and Mrs Mattacola.

We will begin this year by focusing on the story ‘But why can’t I?’ We will use exciting activities such as ordering pictures and using role play to learn the story.  While studying this book, we will also focus on PSHCE, such as developing new relationships and friendships and recapping the school rules.

This term, our topic is ‘Stones and Bones’. During this topic we will focus on dinosaurs. The starting point for this work will be a mini archaeological dig within the school grounds. We will be exploring what life would have been like during the time of the dinosaurs, what dinosaurs ate, where they lived and the discoveries that have been made that have helped us know more about these creatures today.  The popular children’s TV program ‘Land Before Time’ will be the basis of our English topic, in which the children will write their own dinosaur stories.

We will continue the dinosaur theme through other areas of the curriculum. In Music, we will be using our voices expressively and creatively when singing dinosaur songs and during art we will sketch and paint dinosaurs while developing our colour mixing skills.

Our PE days are Wednesday and Friday so please ensure that your child has a PE kit in school each week including shorts, t-shirt and daps so that they are able to participate fully. As we will be spending some time in forest schools it would be great if the children could have suitable warm clothing and footwear which could be left in school during this first term.

We will also set a homework pack with weekly activities to complete. The activity pack will be handed out in the first couple of weeks and can be returned at the end of term, or weekly if preferred. The children receive an R1 for each completed piece of homework handed in. It is also essential that you hear your child read daily and support them with their phonic packs. An R1 will be given each time your child reads at home but please remember to sign their link book to let us know they have read.

We look forward to an exciting and busy term filled with engaging learning opportunities.
