Forrest View

Welcome to Dragonflies class.

Our whole school topic this term is ‘Living in the wider world.’ During the topic we will be comparing and contrasting different countries around the world. Some of the countries we will be exploring are Antarctica, Africa, South America, Australia and Asia. We will be learning about the animals which live in the countries, the habitats and also the people and culture of the countries we explore. The children will also learn to identify famous landmarks from these places and learn about famous people from the past.

In English we will be reading a range of stories based on the countries or habitats we are exploring. We will be using story-telling and role play to learn the stories. The children will also be learning to write sentences using their phonic knowledge. We will learn some poetry and perform them. We will continue learning phonemes using our Read, Write Inc scheme. Please continue to support your child with their reading and phonemes at home. Remember each time your child reads they will receive a shiny. We will also be continuing to use our reading ladder to encourage the children to read as often as possible and also help to encourage their love of reading.

During our maths work we will be learning to recognise number and count to 20. The children will be using resources such as numicon, blocks, pictures and drawings to represent numbers in a range of ways. They will also make addition and subtraction number stories using fingers, tens frames and number tracks. This term, the children will be focusing on subitising numbers to 10 (recognising a number of objects without having to count) and numberbonds to 5 and 10.

PE will continue to take place on Mondays. Our focus this term will be gymnastics where the children will be exploring coordination, balance and strength. They will be working on making and holding shapes and travelling and rolling in different ways. In Summer 2 the children will be focusing on practicing for sports day and playing games which will develop the children’s coordination and athleticism. Forest School sessions will continue too. If you haven’t already done so please could you provide your child with a set of old clothes to be kept at school. We have a class set of waterproofs and plenty of spare wellies but we have no old clothes if your child gets dirty or wet. They will wear these every week during Forest School sessions. Arms and legs must be covered too so long sleeved t-shirts and long trousers are essential.

Finally, feel free to come and see a member of the team if you have any questions.
